Can pomegranate juice to protect against prostate cancer? Numerous studies show that this fruit works wonders, especially in terms of strengthening men’s health.
There have been a number of studies that tried to establish a link between the consumption of pomegranate and cancer prostate. Not all the conclusions of these studies were unambiguous. However, the latest research, published in the journal Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Diseases, studied the effect pomegranate juice and its components in preventing shrine prostates. The scientists came patients were under observation due to the increased size of the prostate, treated with chemotherapy, who had a high risk of tumor recurrence, as well as those who suffered from metastatic prostate cancer in which the tumor has already spread to other parts of the body.
It turned out that people with a high likelihood of recurrence of prostate cancer, receiving pomegranate juice and pomegranate extract significantly slowed two-fold increase in prostate specific antigen. Consequently, the juice and the extract was pushed back the prospect of recurrence of the tumor. However, those who have already received chemotherapy, the products of pomegranate did not give any effect. The prostate specific antigen (PSA) is a protein which is secreted by the prostate gland. The PSA level in the blood is considered a good indicator of early diagnosis of prostate cancer. If the performance of this antigen is increased, the probability of occurrence of the tumor is increased.
The results of this study show that the antioxidant properties of pomegranate juice may not have a pronounced impact on men who are already suffering from the tumor. However, they can benefit from the pomegranate extract. Even those who had a very high risk of recurrence and showed a rapid doubling of PSA, only a certain genotype respond to pomegranate juice.
