Болезнь, которой нет: что такое пограничное расстройство и как его лечить

It is a mental illness that manifests itself in impulsive behavior, unstable mood, fear of loss and the wrong perception of themselves as individuals. People with BPD often also suffer from depression, anxiety disorders or addictions.

What would you do if a friend say that you will not be able to come to your birthday because of problems at work? Surely you’d be upset, but will be included in its position and will not be offended. But if you have borderline disorder, you can take this as military action against you or the failure of communication. You may decide that she does not deserve to be your friend.

BPD often goes unnoticed, although first symptoms may appear in adolescence. It affects how you perceive yourself and others, can cause bouts of anger, impulsive behaviour, incorrect self-image. The world becomes black and white, it is difficult to estimate and consider their actions.

Imagine a line of mental health. At one end of the neurotic spectrum with logical and mentally healthy people. The other psychotic spectrum, where the opposite is true. People with BPD can navigate between these extremes.

What are the main symptoms of this disorder?

1. Any way to avoid loneliness (real or imagined)

The main problem with BPD is the inability to regulate mood and behavior, especially in fear of losing the connection with your partner. In this case, for example, to pester him about sex — or to dramatically cut the contacts not to be abandoned.

2. Unstable aggressive attitude

Returning to the example of happy birthday. A person with BPD, the mood can jump from desire to see all of solitude, from love to hate. It’s hard to fully trust people, which is not conducive to creating a good relationship.

3. Wrong-esteem

People with borderline disorder can emotionally depend on others due to low self-esteem. Sometimes they love themselves, sometimes hate: changing jobs, friends, even the orientation. The worst thing is that about 70% of people with BPD have attempted suicide.

4. Impulsive behavior

For example, a person can eat a whole pizza, having unprotected sex with an unknown partner, take drugs, or to buy thing that he can not afford.

5. The constant feeling of emptiness

People with BPD often suffer from bad mood, and this feeling stronger than with depression or schizophrenia.

6. Quickly switch between emotional States

For example, if when discussing favorite colors, a partner will name another, this can cause a bout of tears and panic.

7. Sudden bouts of rage

People with BPD anger can talk shit, and then all of them do not remember. Rage might be directed against himself.

What causes it?

The causes of mental disorders is still not fully understood. This is probably a combination of genetic, social and neurological reasons:

  • genetics and family history. If a parent, brother or sister suffered from BPD, and increased risk of its occurrence with other relatives. This may be due to genetics, growing up in the same house with a person who is prone to rage and punishment;
  • natural and social factors. Is there a connection between trauma, violence, loneliness and PSR, especially if it started in childhood. Heavier women survive trauma, so they have this disorder is more common;
  • neurological factors. People with BPD marked by weaker brain activity in areas associated with behavioral control and stronger in the areas that are responsible for anger and fear.

How it is treated? Magic cure for BPD no. Most people learn to control their emotions, thoughts and behavior with psychotherapy. Many people with this disorder also suffer from depression, PTSD, anxiety, and drug addiction. Therefore, in many cases it is necessary to connect the complex therapy.
